Shine: Romantic Movie of a Pleasure Seeking Pianist
July 9th, 2008 · No Comments
Shine (1996) turns out to be a rather romantic movie. It’s the story of a young prodigy pianist who loses it at music college, turns into a pleasure-seeking adult without proper social constraints, an idiot-savant, if you will, and ends up getting lucky in middle age.
The movie is a loose adaption of the life of David Helfgott, an Australian concert pianist.

A Very Sweet Movie: Sex Lies and Videotape
July 7th, 2008 · No Comments
I just watched a very sweet movie, Sex, Lies, and Videotape(1989).
Andie MacDowell shines as a newly married housewife, Ann, caught in a love quadrangle. The movie has a slow, dreamy pace that runs at the speed of Ann’s unfolding. We follow her as she figures out what’s going on and brings into alignment what she wants and who she is with what she has.

Your Body Believes Every Word You Say
July 6th, 2008 · No Comments
Any book that gives me insight into why things are happening to me is priceless. Your Body Believes Every Work You Say by Barbara Hoberman Levine is just such a book.
I read Ms Levine’s section about patients anticipatory thoughts about radiation treatment for cancer predicting their results. The patient who thought of the radiation as “black and red arrows spraying his body” had a bad result while the patient who thought of the radiation as a “golden beam of energy” had a good result. (See page 164.)

Love Smart: Don’t Reinvent Yourself to Suit a Potential Partner
April 19th, 2008 · No Comments
OK, because I have too many Pseudo Boyfriends and no Real Ones, I figure I’d better make a study of Dr Phil’s Love Smart.
First things first, Dr Phil tells us to figure out who we are and what we want, else we’ll be wasting our time barking up the wrong trees. Well, I’ve wasted my time plenty and I am not alone.
