A Very Sweet Movie: Sex Lies and Videotape
July 7th, 2008 · No Comments
I just watched a very sweet movie, Sex, Lies, and Videotape(1989).
Andie MacDowell shines as a newly married housewife, Ann, caught in a love quadrangle. The movie has a slow, dreamy pace that runs at the speed of Ann’s unfolding. We follow her as she figures out what’s going on and brings into alignment what she wants and who she is with what she has.
James Spader won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his role of Graham, who seduces Ann with his honesty. The scenes between Ann and Graham remind me of days long gone when conversations among friends were languorous.
As a cultural side-note: The female character styling in this movie still today seems viably self-expressive nearly 20 years on, while the male styling, especially of John (Ann’s husband played by Peter Gallagher) scream 1989.
This movie was directed by Steven Soderbergh.
