Britney Spears’s Bad Biology Gets Her in Trouble

March 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Neurology professor Robert Sapolsky writes about Britney Spears’s bad biology. “It’s not her fault that she’s bipolar . . .” in The San Francisco Chronicle’s Open Forum (Tuesday March 25, 2008).

The problem with being bipolar is that your manic episodes can be fun, so you’re not as inclined to take your meds as if you were, say, diabetic or depressed. Therefore, Brittney’s handlers need to be more vigilant.

Dr Sapolsky explains the disease as abnormal neurochemistry and asks his reader to consider forgiving people such as Brittney, who apparently has “crappy values,” because physiological differences make it difficult for them to behave as we might think they should.

I’m all for that. Besides, Brittney’s young and her brain is not fully developed.* She needs a village.

* Professor Dacher Keltner of UC Berkeley explains that the decision making structure in the brain continues to develop until the age of 30 (in lectures: Psychology 156 Human Emotion, Fall 2007).
