Honesty Reaps Success

December 17th, 2007 · No Comments

“Own your failure openly, publicly, with genuine regret but absolutely no shame, and you’ll reap a harvest of forgiveness, trust, respect, and connection—the things you thought you’d get by succeeding. Ironic, isn’t it?”

So writes Martha Beck in her December 2007 column for Oprah Magazine. Ms. Beck is author of numerous books. Her latest? Leaving the Saints: How I Lost the Mormons and Found My Faith.

Why do we think we’ll reap forgiveness, trust, respect, and connection with success? Isn’t one person’s success likely to bring out jealousy and judgement in others?

As a kid, I worried that if I won every game I’d separate myself too much from my peers. As an adult, especially as a manager in a large corporation, I began to see that people, particularly the ones who worked for me, wanted me to do well—they depended on it.

We’re interdependent in our society.  We depend on each other to do the best we can. (Can you imagine the accidents if most drivers didn’t try to drive right?)

When things don’t go as planned, figuring out why and admitting it increases our collective knowledge and understanding. (Did you make a snide remark because you were jealous? Admit it. Chances are you’ll reap sympathy.)

Every interaction that elicits positive emotions is a success.
