Small Fry: A Memoir
is a very particular coming of age memoir, particular because it is by Steve Jobs’s first born child, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, whose existence he had difficultly acknowledging. Reading the book, I felt myself transported to Ms. Brennan-Jobs’s Palo Alto world. I slunk down leafy sidewalks with her, rooting for her efforts to be independent of household turmoil, her mother serial dating and having trouble with household expenses, her father vacillating between support and abandonment. I shared her bafflement at her father’s frequent, punishing admonition: If you want to be part of this family, you’ll have to put in the time. I think, without realizing it, Steve Jobs was talking about himself. I wish Ms. Brennan-Jobs all the best.
